What to Do If Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarms

A carbon monoxide alarm is a life-saving device that warns you of dangerous CO levels from malfunctioning gas appliances including your furnace, boiler, or water heater. CO is colourless and odourless, making it impossible to detect without an alarm. This guide covers the immediate actions to take and how to ensure your gas appliances are safe afterward.

Immediate Steps to Take

1. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY — get everyone out of the building, including pets. Do not spend time investigating. 2. Call 911 from outside. Tell the operator your CO detector has alarmed and you have evacuated. 3. Do not re-enter until emergency services has cleared the building and confirmed CO levels are safe. 4. Symptoms of CO exposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, and confusion. If anyone has these symptoms, tell emergency services immediately.

Next Steps

5. After the building is cleared, have a licensed gas fitter inspect all gas appliances — furnace, boiler, water heater, gas fireplace — to identify which appliance caused the CO and repair it. 6. Ensure you have working CO detectors on every floor of your home and outside each sleeping area. Test detectors monthly and replace batteries annually. 7. Do not restart any gas appliances until they have been professionally inspected and cleared.
