Boiler Pilot Light Out? What Metro Vancouver Homeowners Should Know
A boiler pilot light that has gone out is a common issue, especially in older boilers with standing pilot lights. While relighting the pilot is a straightforward procedure, understanding why it went out and whether the underlying issue has been resolved is critical for reliable operation. CANRO Heating and Cooling has been servicing boilers in Metro Vancouver homes since 1989, and our technicians have extensive experience with both standing pilot and electronic ignition boiler systems. This guide covers the safe relighting procedure for standing pilot boilers, common causes of pilot light failure, and when to call a professional gas fitter to address recurring problems. Serving Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley, and all surrounding communities.
How to Safely Relight Your Boiler Pilot Light
Before attempting to relight your boiler pilot light, locate the gas control valve on the boiler. Turn the valve to the off position and wait a full five minutes for any accumulated gas to dissipate. This waiting period is essential for safety. After five minutes, turn the valve to the pilot setting. Depress and hold the reset button while using a long-reach lighter or BBQ igniter to light the pilot flame through the access opening. Continue holding the reset button for thirty to sixty seconds after the pilot ignites to allow the thermocouple to heat up and generate enough electrical current to keep the gas valve open. Release the button, verify that the pilot flame remains lit, and turn the valve to the on position. If the pilot does not stay lit, the thermocouple may need replacement.
Common Causes of Boiler Pilot Light and Ignition Failures
Standing pilot lights on boilers can fail for several reasons beyond a simple draft. A faulty thermocouple is the most common cause, this copper safety device senses whether the pilot flame is present and will shut off gas flow if it does not detect sufficient heat. Over time, thermocouples wear out and produce less electrical current. A dirty pilot orifice can produce a weak yellow flame that fails to properly heat the thermocouple. Drafts from open doors, windows, or ventilation systems can blow out the pilot flame. In electronic ignition systems, the most common failures are a faulty ignitor, a dirty flame sensor, or a failed control board. Each of these issues requires professional diagnosis and repair to restore reliable boiler operation.
When to Call CANRO for Boiler Pilot Light Issues
If the pilot light will not stay lit after three relight attempts, or if you smell gas at any point during the process, stop and call CANRO immediately. A strong gas odor indicates a potential safety system failure. If the pilot flame is yellow or orange instead of a crisp blue, this indicates incomplete combustion that requires burner cleaning and adjustment. If your boiler has an electronic ignition system and is not lighting at all, do not attempt to bypass any safety controls. Call CANRO at (604) 559-1612 for professional diagnosis and repair. Our licensed gas fitters carry replacement thermocouples, gas valves, ignitors, and control boards for all major boiler brands and can usually complete same-day repairs.
Safety Reminder
If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
