Spring AC Preparation

Schedule professional AC or heat pump tune-up before summer heat arrives. Clean the outdoor condensing unit — remove winter debris and gently rinse the coil. Check refrigerant charge. Test the system in cooling mode on a mild day. Replace the air filter with a clean one. Clear vegetation from around the outdoor unit.

Furnace Off-Season Care

Replace the air filter. Clean the blower compartment. Check the condensate drain — pour a cup of water with a small amount of bleach down the drain to prevent algae growth. Close the combustion air intake if it is adjustable. Leave the furnace power on (needed for summer AC operation).

Thermostat and System Setup

Switch the thermostat to cooling mode. Program the schedule for summer occupancy. Set the temperature to 24-25°C when home. Test the AC or heat pump cooling by lowering the temperature 5°C below room temperature — verify cold air comes from vents. Check that the condensate drain is flowing freely.
