Combi Boiler — Pros and Cons for Vancouver Homes
Published: July 14, 2026 — CANRO Heating & Cooling — Greater Vancouver, BC
What Is a Combi Boiler
A combination (combi) boiler provides both central heating and domestic hot water from a single compact unit — no separate hot water tank required. It heats water on demand directly from the mains. Combi boilers are the most common boiler type in the UK and increasingly popular in Greater Vancouver for condos, townhouses, and homes with limited mechanical room space.
Advantages of Combi Boilers
Space saving — eliminate the hot water tank entirely. Unlimited hot water as long as the boiler runs. Energy efficient — no standing heat loss from a stored tank. Lower installation cost than conventional boiler + tank systems. Modern condensing combi boilers from Navien, Viessmann, and Baxi achieve 95%+ AFUE. Ideal for apartments, condos, and homes with 1-2 bathrooms.
Disadvantages
Limited simultaneous hot water — a combi can only heat for one major draw at a time. Flow rate depends on boiler kW rating. Homes with 3+ bathrooms are better served by a system boiler with an indirect hot water tank. The wait for hot water can be slightly longer than a stored-tank system.
Popular Models in Vancouver
Navien NFC series combi-boilers dominate the Vancouver market. Viessmann Vitodens combi units offer premium German engineering. Baxi combi boilers provide competitive pricing. When selecting a combi, the hot water flow rate specification matters more than the central heating output rating.
