A condensate pump is needed when your condensing boiler is located below the drain level — for example, in a basement where gravity cannot drain the acidic condensate to a floor drain or outside. The pump collects condensate in a small reservoir, and when the water level rises, a float switch activates the pump to propel the water up and out through a small-diameter tube to a drain. If the condensate pump fails, the boiler detects the backup water level through an overflow safety switch and shuts down to prevent water damage. Signs of a failing condensate pump include: the pump runs but does not pump water; the pump is noisy or vibrating excessively; water leaking from the pump reservoir; or the boiler keeps shutting off with a condensate-related error code.
